Dorsal root ganglion cells give rise to all sensory endorgans throughout the body. A
central projection of the soma is the dorsal root entering the spinal cord where synapses are made to CNS neurons. A peripheral projection extends to body regions forming receptors for detection of the environment and of self. Axonal endings are specialized by the organization of receptor endorgans that form with supporting cells and connective tissue.
The cord contributes three motor systems to the PNS: 1) Skeletal muscle innervation (extension and flexion), 2) stretch receptor intrafusal muscle innervations and 3) preganglionic sympathetic to chain ganglia & parasympathetic axonal ganglia in visceral organs (parasympathetic).
