TELEDENDRA FORM RECEPTOR ORGANS
Dorsal Root Ganglion Cells & Cranial Nerve Axons form the interface of the body to the brain through the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The most peripheral portion of the axon is transformed into a dendritic arbor where receptor organs are generated by axon interactions with specialized support-cells. Some dendritic projections contain receptors of specialized sense organs and others made synapses on specialized receptor cells.
Each PNS neuronal projection carries specialized sensory modalities. Sensory nerves all have associated cellular specializations except free nerve endings. The specializations are formed from accessory cells most likely related to sheath cells that also shroud unmyelinated fibers.
Examples of receptors are Meisners corpuscles, Merkels disks. touch domes and temperature receptors in the skin. Deep in tissue, Pacinian corpuscles and Ruffini joint receptors determine pressures and position.
Deeper in the body are muscle stretch receptors and Golgi tendon organs that sense mechanical changes.
