Triggering of action potentials occurs at the initial segment of the axon. This transitional region of neurons is signalled by synaptic inputs in dendrites and soma. Synaptic-potentials operate at only about 3 mV although they summate by 10 to 30 mV. The signal to the initial segment is from summation of synaptic potentials throughout dendrites and the soma.
