A major ionic force arises within the milieu of the resting potential where sodium ions have a strong potential to return to the inside of the neuron but are held by the plasma membrane with any leakage opposed by pumps. Sodium ionic signaling occurs when voltage-gated sodium channels open for a brief exchange of sodium and potassium at local points along the axon.
