The fifth nerve enters the brainstem at the midpons. Gasserion ganglion neurons send root fibers caudally in the brainstem to levels reaching C4 of the cord. They synapse on spinal 5th nucleus that formed the ventral trigeminal tract carrying pain/temp to the thalamus. Various levels of the brainstem and cord are represented in the distribution over the face. The chief sensory nucleus receives Gasserion ganglion axons from the most highly specific receptors localizing touch, pressure and joint position. The signals for 2 point tactile, vibration and stereological localizations are carried to the thalamus via the dorsal trigeminal tract.
