The twelfth nerve emerges between the inferior olive and the pyramid which places it in the region of the open medulla, dorsally. On the ventral side of the brainstem, the 12th nerve roots are small and flexible joining into a hypoglossal nerve bundle that exits the cranium. The main role of the nerve is to shape and expel the tongue. The bilateral motion forms a wide range of motions, forcing food to the teeth, speech enhancement and a range of facial expressions in combination with the seventh nerve.
