In the rostral closed medulla, the dorsal funiculi show the 4 dorsal funicular nuclei and their associated ascending pathways. Internal arcuate fibers of the gracile and cuneate nuclei sweep ventrally around the central canal and their crossing the midline dorsal to the pyramids wheere they form the contralateral medial lemniscus. The descending nucleus and tract of the 5th nerve appear in cross section. Ventral, the pyramids form the base of the brainstem.
