A narrow sub-dural space is a very narrow shearing zone between the dura and the arachnoid membrane (red). The pia (green) is on the surface of or the CNS is attached to the arachnoid membrane (red) by trabeculae. Arachnoid trabeculae cross the irregular sub-arachnoid space. A large subarachnoid space, containing CSF, surrounds the cord, and extends on to the PIA (green).
