The muscle innervation related to the lumbosacral (ventral horn) enlargement is considered to be primarily from L4 -S3. The overall plexus has contributions L2 - S3 giving rise to the two major lower extremity nerves: Femoral and Sciatic nerves.

This plexus develops because, during development, the limb pushed out carrying L2-L5 onto the leg but lack a trunk representation.
On the sacral side, S1-S3 form the majority of the sacral nerve.
