Spinal sensory nerves are axons of dorsal root ganglion neurons. These nerve terminations develop peripheral receptors by interactions with connective tissue and body organs. The specific functional modalities are determined by nerve terminal interactions with NS supporting cell.

Spinal nerves also contain axons from motor neurons of the the ventral horn and lateral horn. Motor axon terminations target skeletal, cardiac or smooth muscle as well as glands. Some nerves interact with hormone producing organs in the body as well as in the hypothalamus.
The interaction of sensory and motor neurons in the spinal cord yield reflexes that are part of unconscious and/or conscious behavioral actions.
