Olfactory Receptor Cells
These are the only receptor cells that have axons. The olfactory epithelium can readily regenerate giving rise to new receptor neurons that send axonal projections to the olfactory bulb (cortex). These axons connect directly with CNS neurons of the olfactory bulb in glomeruli that cover the surface of the bulb.
Receptor cells in auditory, vestibular and visual receptor cells can not regenerate in adult mammals.
