In both phylogeny and ontogeny, the earliest telencephalic component to develop is the olfactory system. Next to it is the Hippocampus. The late arriving the neocortex forms between the two. In primates, the neocortex becomes so large that it pushes the hippocampus caudally into the temporal lobe. The neocortex takes a C shape and covers the olfactory receptor region, olfactory bulb and olfactory cortex.
